Stop Violence in Iran

Petrovac, Montenegro, 26-27 June 2009

Emergency Resolution

The Socialist International Women, SIW, are deeply concerned about the escalation of violence in Iran, following the outcome of the presidential elections which are being disputed.

SIW is against any kind of violence and threat to human lives, especially when exercised by states and governments against civilians and citizens who demonstrate and voice their opposition and demand their rights.

The demonstrations in Iran are held mainly by young women and men, students, intellectuals, and other members of the civil society, who feel robbed of their vote.

The Socialist International Women acknowledge the important role of the Iranian women in the struggle for democracy, human rights and especially for the right to protest.

The protest and the violent repression do not seem to come to an end; on the contrary they encourage each other.

The Socialist International Women, while asserting that the right to freedom of opinion and expression, the right to physical integrity, the right to protest peacefully are fundamental rights,

calls for an immediate end to the violence resulting in deaths of innocent civilians, especially young women and men;

urges the government, institutions and people of good will of Iran to find a non-violent solution to the conflict, to meet the aspirations of the Iranian people and to respect democratic principles, as well as protect and promote human rights.
